Sow Seeds
.
When I was going to College I wanted to become a school counselor. So for my college internship I worked with a school counselor but I had to do weekly internship supervision meetings with a Supervisor at a local Mental Health Clinic (ironically a couple years later it was the same location I worked with during my case management position for a few years). Weekly I would report in how things were going and what I was doing etc.
.
One thing she told me I have NEVER forgotten and it OFTEN will float back into my mindset. Quite frequently (years later) it did with my old case management job. I always was (still am) one to want to FIX everything. Hated to see people struggle and felt if I can provide a solution or answer, AND IF they would just take my support and advice, it would all workout in the end.
.
I learned over and over IT DOESN’T work that way all the time. I can ONLY help someone HELP themselves. I CAN NOT do it all for them or FIX the problem, situation, etc.
.
She told me that I needed to realize that what I WAS doing was “planting a seed”. I may work with a child and want to see change but in my time of my support I may not see what I was hoping for. BUT if during that time I continued to plant seeds, 10years from then, that child may say it was YOU that changed their course of life. I may not see the TREE they grow into but my influence, guidance, support (feeding, watering, nurturing) may have a positive impact after all. Then they may produce fruit and spread that positive change on.
.
You never know what seeds you’re planting. Give what you can give. Let it germinate.
.
This insight changed my mindset. I may not see immediate results. We must Stop *expecting* — we can’t make things grow. Plant and water and let it grow. —We can’t get everything at the speed of light. Sometimes it’s the speed of the seed!
.
So remember: Seeds. They go underground. They disappear. They germinate beneath the surface. They’re still there. The potential is disguised and hidden. We have no idea what a seed may become.
.
*Faith is like a seed. A little faith goes a long way.*
